Anonymous Rapid HIV Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make an appointment?

  • You may walk in at any time to make an appointment, or if we have slots available right then, take the test immediately.
  • We do not accept appointments over the phone because the fee must be paid at the time the appointment is made.
  • Please call the Office for Wellness and Health Promotion at (213) 740-4777 for more information.

Is it a blood test?

No, OraQuick allows for an oral sample. There are no needles involved and the results are just as accurate as a blood draw.

Can I have a copy of my results?

No. Because the test is completely anonymous, we only know you by a code. Therefore, the only person who can connect your face with your code is the person who tested you. Your results are then basically useless and we do not give them out nor do they go in your medical chart. They are shredded after your appointment.

Am I tested by a doctor?

No. Our anonymous HIV counselors are trained peer health educators.

Can my partner or a friend come with me?

Anyone can come with you TO the appointment. They cannot however, come into the appointment with you for either the test or the results. This is our policy, regardless of whether you give that person permission.

Are there other places in the community I can get tested?

Yes! See our updated list of community clinics that offer free and anonymous testing.
