Inclusion Statement

We want to reach out and voice our concerns about how micro and macro- aggressions impact Trojans. These can be non-verbal behaviors or verbal statements that are subtle or overt, which implies racism or our biases that sometimes we are not aware of or acknowledge. Everyone has biases and judgements based on their experiences and life events. However, we can uphold a commitment to the Trojan community by talking about our concerns, biases, and how others actions impact us. A way to change our environment is to share our reactions, feelings, and concerns, so that it breaks the silence that can continue to harm others.

We also need to know our biases and judgments and recognize how this can impact others, as well as be open to hearing others feedback. Sharing observations and feedback, being open and flexible in our thinking keeps these verbal or non-verbal actions in check, so they are less likely to impact or affect others.

The Counseling Center staff is here to help and support the campus community. We understand that students psychological functioning can be negatively impacted when they experience discrimination, and these types of aggressions. We encourage others to reach out and get support from others or a professional to get the support one may need. We do not want students to suffer in silence. We want students to feel empowered, hopeful and feel connected to the Trojan community.

Counseling is a resource that allows students to problem solve, explore and manage their emotional responses that can arise when dealing with biases and discrimination. It is important students reach out, so their academic and daily functioning is not negatively impacted.
