Learn about STDs and the importance of detecting and treating them early!

STDs can lead to serious health problems if not diagnosed and treated early. Undetected and untreated STDs can increase a person’s risk for human immunodeficiency virus infection and cause other serious health consequences, such as infertility. However, most STDs are treatable, and many are curable. STD screening can help detect disease early and, when combined with appropriate treatment, is one of the most effective tools available to protect one’s health and prevent the spread of STDs to others.

The Engemann Student Health Center provides STD Screenings for your convenience.

Learn about ways to stay healthy during the winter months.

It’s the time of year when we like to gather and share treats and foods. It’s also the perfect opportunity for gastrointestinal viruses, like Norovirus to flourish. University Park Health Center wants our university population to stay healthy and avoid getting these common and unpleasant gastrointestinal illnesses especially since we have seen an increase in the number of cases in students in the past week.

These viruses spread easily from person-to-person by touching contaminated surfaces, and eating food and liquids that have been contaminated. The infection is usually a mild illness that begins suddenly and causes symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and sometimes low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and tiredness. There is no specific treatment for this infection except good hydration and anti-nausea medications in severe cases. Symptoms typically resolve within 48 hours.

The health center recommends following these common sense steps to aid in prevention:

Wash your hands often, especially after using the restroom.

Rinse fruits and vegetables very well (fresh fruits and lettuce especially)

Cook shellfish thoroughly

Clean possibly infected surfaces with chlorine bleach solution (this includes computer key boards)

Wash and dry infected clothing

Don’t make contact with anyone who is infected or share food or utensils with them

All students, staff and faculty are urged to take extra precautions in preventing the spread of this virus. Washing your hands often and thoroughly is one of the best ways to help prevent it from spreading.

If you have any of these symptoms, it is best to stay home. Staying hydrated is very important if you are sick. Risk of dehydration is serious and can be avoided by drinking sports drinks and other drinks without caffeine or alcohol.

If you have concerns please call the health center at 213 740-9355.

For more information about Norovirus, please refer to the following link: http://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/about/overview.html

The Student Health Fee

To best cover all of our USC students’ healthcare needs, all students are required to pay the student health fee. This fee covers services provided by the Engemann Student Health Center, however, it does not cover services provided outside the student health center particularly in an emergency situation where hospitalization may be required. For this reason, USC requires all students to have supplemental health insurance.

USC Student Health Insurance Plan

The USC Student Health Insurance Plan is a separate fee from the student health fee and will help cover the cost of healthcare not available at the health center, particularly in an emergency situation where hospitalization may be required. Students carrying six or more units are automatically enrolled in the USC Student Health Insurance Plan. All international and Health Sciences Campus students are automatically enrolled even if they carry less than six units. Enrollment in the USC Student Health Insurance Plan can be waived with documented proof of adequate health coverage.

Waiving Coverage

Enrollment in the USC Student Health Insurance Plan will only be waived if you show proof that you have other adequate health insurance which meets USC’s insurance requirements. Students who are enrolled in an alternate health insurance plan (or who are on their parents’ plan) may request to waive (relinquish) enrollment in the USC Student Health Insurance Plan by providing proof of comparable coverage.
